The Plan As You Go Vacation

One incredibly fun way to travel is to plan everything as you go.  Most people are under the mistaken impression that travel has to be carefully planned at that itineraries must be followed exactly.  While carefully planning out every detail of your travels can be an excellent way to travel there is something to be said about leaving things to chance and making decisions on the fly about where you will go and what you will do.

Last minute airfares are an excellent excuse to embark on a plan as you go vacation.  These discounted airfares are usually announced in the middle of the week and they usually have a Friday departure and a Monday or Tuesday return.  If you don’t already subscribe to these rates for several airlines so that you will receive a listing of weekly airfare discounts in your email.  Just choose an airfare that is affordable and will take you to a vacation destination that you have always wanted to try.  Once you book your flight you will have taken the first step to taking a completely unplanned vacation.

These discounted airfares usually become available in the middle of the week and depart on a Saturday which means that once you reserve your flight, you will have a couple of days to pack for your trip.  If you chose a location that requires special clothing such as the beach or a ski resort in the winter you may need to pick up a few essential items before beginning your trip.  If the location that you have chosen doesn’t require any special or specific clothing you might even consider not even packing for the trip.  You could add to the fun by planning to by everything you need when you reach your destination.

It’s very common for travelers to research their travel destination and carefully plan out the activities that they would like to participate in and the landmarks that they would like to visit while on vacation but this isn’t always necessary.  You may find that not planning so meticulously adds to the fun of the adventure.  In fact not making an itinerary at all and not researching the popular tourist attractions will give you the freedom to wait until you arrive and choose any activities that sound appealing.

Many travelers research the available dining options available at their destination before they even begin their trip.  This can give them a good idea of what restaurants to patronize while on vacation.  However, this too can be skipped.  Leaving your options open gives you the freedom to experiment more and choose restaurants that are not as well known.  Asking the locals for restaurant recommendations can help you to avoid overpriced, tourist traps.  The other advantage is that following the recommendation of a local will most likely lead to an excellent meal at an establishment that is not overcrowded.

Not all travel has to be carefully planned out.  If you are a free spirit you may find that you enjoy traveling on a whim.  You may also find that making decisions about where to go, where to stay, where to eat and what to do during your adventure can be a very rewarding experience.
