The Benefits of All Inclusive Travel

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Those who have never heard the term all inclusive travel simply do not know what they are missing. This type of travel cannot be beat for convenience and options. Many all inclusive vacation destinations are located in resorts that are outside of major cities where traveling for food, entertainment or shopping may not be convenient. These resorts are often renowned for their picturesque scenery and isolation but this scenery and isolation often comes with the price of not having a variety of restaurants and nightclubs nearby. When you stay at an all inclusive resort, you can enjoy the isolation of the resort without sacrificing the opportunity to sample native cuisine or enjoy the nightlife.

Understanding just what is included in an all inclusive vacation is the first step to enjoying a vacation like no other. The items that are included under the all inclusive umbrella vary from resort to resort so you have to read the literature for the resort carefully to determine just what is included and what requires an additional charge. In most cases the term all inclusive refers to meals, entertainment and onsite activities. This means that your breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included in the price of the vacation package. Many resorts even offer full service snack bars that are open in between meals for light snacks as an inclusion in the price of an all inclusive vacation. Alcoholic drinks as well as sodas are also usually included in the price of an all inclusive vacation. Many all inclusive resorts also have entertainment at night including shows, music and dancing that is free to their registered guests. All inclusive resorts also typically conduct onsite activities such as exercise classes, nature walks and games and these two are usually included in the price of a stay at an all inclusive resort.

Above are some very common inclusions in all inclusive vacations. There are some resorts that also include additional features in the price of their all inclusive vacation package. Offsite excursions are sometimes included in your all inclusive vacation package. There are usually restrictions on these activities such as which excursions are included and which days you can participate as well as a limitation on the number of included excursions. Having these activities included gives you the luxury of not having to make any of the arrangements for these excursions. You simply tell hotel management which excursions you would like to enjoy and on which days you will be available and they contact the touring company to make the arrangements. Some all inclusive resorts also include room service in their standard rate. Like excursions this is sometimes included and sometimes requires an additional charge so it is important to read the resort information carefully.

Services such as salon services and massages are usually not included in the price of an all inclusive vacation. Some extravagant resorts may include these services but most resorts do not. They may have a full service salon or a massage center onsite but services such as manicures, pedicures, facials and massages usually require additional fees.

An all inclusive vacation can be a great way to travel. The majority of your expenses are paid up front and you can relax during your vacation because most luxuries are already paid for so you don’t have to be constantly making decisions on whether or not you will visit a particular restaurant.

Choosing a Travel Companion

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

Choosing a companion for your travel adventure can be a difficult decision.  It is imperative that you choose a travel companion who will help you to enjoy your trip as opposed to one who will stress you out and prevent you from having a good time on your vacation.  Traveling with someone who shares your interests and opinions on what makes a great vacation can be a very enjoyable experience but traveling with someone who has opinions about vacations that conflict with yours and who enjoys different activities can be very stressful.  Whether you are married, single or involved in a committed relationship you will have decisions to make regarding who you bring along on your vacation.

Those who are married may not always have an automatic travel companion.  Although a husband and wife may be compatible in most ways, it is not a guarantee that they will have compatible travel styles.  One of the partners may enjoy adventure, constant activity and a fast pace while the other partner may enjoy calm activities, a relaxing pace and lots of downtime.  These travel styles are clearly opposite and those in this type of situation may consider taking separate vacations with friends who share their travel style as opposed to their spouse who prefers a different type of travel.  However, if the couple enjoys the same activities and shares similar opinions on vacations styles then traveling together can be a wonderful experience.

Those who are single may have very difficult decisions to make when it comes to choosing a travel companion.  Many friendships have been destroyed or strengthened while on vacation.  Choosing a friend to accompany you on your vacation is very important because you will be spending a great deal of time with this friend so it is important that they are someone that you share a lot in common with and who will not get on your nerves after a short while making the remainder of the vacation full of stress and tension.  Choosing one or more of your friends to accompany you on your vacation is important to the quality of the vacation but not choosing some of your friends is also an important decision.  You may not wish to travel with all of your friends but you should be prepared for the fact that those who are not invited may be offended and this could cause problems in your friendship.

Those who are not yet married but are in a committed relationship share similar dilemmas as a married couple when it comes to choosing a travel companion.  Again, it seems logical to take the trip with your romantic partner but you may find that the two of you are not well matched in travel styles.  This is not necessarily an indication that the relationship is flawed because it is perfectly acceptable for couples to have different travel styles.  When the two of you are mature enough to realize these differences and understand that traveling together is not always an option, it can actually strengthen the relationship.

Who you travel with is just as important as where you go and what you do on your vacation.  You are likely to spend more time with your travel partner than you would under normal circumstances so there is greater potential for the two of you to begin to annoy each other.  For this reason it is advisable that you consider your travel companion and make your decision wisely.

Keeping a Travel Journal

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Whether you are travel to overseas for a couple of months or spending a long weekend in a neighboring city, keeping a travel journal can be a wonderful idea.  It doesn’t have to be fancy, expensive or complicated but it can provide you with a lifetime of memories of your trip.  Sure there are some aspects of your trip that you may never forget but remembering particular details such as street names, historic dates or other significant facts could be more difficult.  For this reason, it is advisable that you take many pictures and keep a journal while you are on your trip.  This will give you a way to accurately recall the events of your trip.

A notebook sized journal is an excellent idea if you plan to insert pictures into your journal to create a kind of scrap book of your adventure.  Consider choosing a book that is large enough for pictures but small enough to fit comfortable in your backpack or purse so that you can keep it close at hand during your adventures.  This will make it extremely convenient to pull out your journal each time you want to record a specific event or document a certain part of your trip.  When you take pictures, record the location and date that the picture was taken as well as any other significant facts about the landmark.  Also, leave a space in your journal to add the picture in later so that it appears directly above or below your comments.

If you wish to just maintain a literary record of your travels, you might find a pocket sized notebook to be extremely useful.  This is extremely portable and you can easily carry it with you wherever you go so that you don’t miss a single thing.  While you may be tempted to write down every detail of your trip and it is a good idea to record as much as possible, do not get so caught up in writing about your adventures that you fail to thoroughly enjoy them.

Another journal method for travel is to keep your journal in your hotel room and write about the day’s adventures at the conclusion of the day.  This may not be the best option if you are looking for accurate records of where you went and what you saw because even by the end of the day you may have forgotten some details.  This option, however, is ideal for those who are looking to create a memory of their thoughts and feelings while on vacation.

Another fun journal idea is to keep a record of those who you meet while on vacation.  You could consider taking pictures of each person you meet and getting their name and address so that you can exchange pictures and letters in the future.  This is a great way to create lasting friendships while you are on vacation.

Whatever journal option you choose, it is important to remember that the method that works best for you is the method that you should use.  If you are adept at conveying the feelings and emotions of the day then you might prefer a journal that is more based on emotion.  Conversely, if you are better at recording details and remembering locations and dates you might choose a more detail orientated journal.

Tips for Car Travel with Young Children

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

The phrase, “Are we there yet?” can drive a parent crazy especially when it is repeated approximately every ten minutes of a car trip that exceeds three hours. Although traveling by car can be a very affordable mode of transportation for families with children it can also be quite an adventure especially if the car trip is lengthy. There are, however, many trips that can help to make traveling in a car with young children a pleasant experience for all. Frequent stops, adequate entertainment and nutritious snacks are just a few tricks of the trade that can help to make car travel an enjoyable experience when children are involved.

Stopping periodically is essential when you are traveling with children. Children have notoriously short attention spans and stopping the car every hour or so to let them stretch their legs or run around at a rest area gives them the opportunity to burn off some excess energy and helps to keep them from becoming bored with sitting still in the car. Trying to stretch too long between stops can result in the children become restless and whiny in the car which makes the trip difficult for everyone involved. Bringing along toys such as balls and jump ropes for use at the rest areas will give the children a chance to play and exercise and will keep them looking forward to the next stop. Be careful to supervise the children closely and to make sure that they only play in the grassy areas away from the vehicles.

Bringing along toys, books or movies to entertain your child while the car is in motion can also make the trip more enjoyable. If you have a portable DVD player, try refraining from allowing your children to watch their favorite movies for a week or two before the trip so that they will be really excited to see the movie in the car. Also, either purchase a few new small toys or books that can be used in the car or hide a few old favorites before the trip so that they will seem like new when you give them to your child in the car. Keeping a child entertained in a car can be difficult because they would much rather be running and playing but following a few of these tips can help to hold your child’s attention span for longer periods of time.

Proper nutrition should not be neglected on car trips. Many adults tend to rely on fast food and junk foods during car trips but these foods could make your child’s stomach upset or could make them hyper which makes it even more difficult for them to sit still in a car. Pack healthy and nutritious snacks such as fruits and vegetables, sandwiches, cheese snacks and milk and juice. Refrain from giving your child sugary snacks such as candy and sodas because these can make your child feel overly hyper and can make them feel cranky when the effects of sugar begin to wear off. Conversely, providing healthy and nutritious snacks will keep your child’s blood sugar levels stable and will keep them properly fueled for the trip.

Car trips with young children don’t have to be difficult. With a little advanced planning these trips can be enjoyable for everyone and can include many stops at scenic locations for picnics or play. Besides making frequent stops, bringing along entertainment for your child as well as nutritious snacks will help to make car travel with your children a pleasant experience.

Emergency Kit for When You Travel

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

It is always a good idea to bring along a few emergency provisions when you are traveling by car. You may never need any of these items but in the event that you do, you will be extremely happy to have brought along this kit. It can be a real life saver in an emergency situation. The items that you pack along may vary by season or you may maintain a constant kit that includes provisions for all seasons. In addition to the medical items that you include in this kit, you should also stock your car with items for car emergencies such as a spare tire, tire iron, jack and other equipment.

An emergency doesn’t have to be big and it can be an item that you leave in your car so that it is always there when you need it. Depending on what you would like to include in the kit you might even be able to make it small enough to fit into your glove compartment. There are a few basic items that should be included in emergency kits for all seasons. These items include, but are not limited to items for cuts, sprains, allergies and headaches. For cuts you should include bandages, gauze, medical tape and antiseptic. For sprains, you should include bandages to wrap up the sprained joint. Antihistamines work well for allergies and ibuprofen or aspirin is recommended for headaches. You should also include and medications that you need for pre-existing medical conditions. Before each trip you should check the expiration dates of all medicines to ensure that they are not expired. You might also consider packing bottled water and protein bars or other non-perishable food items in case you become lost for an extended period of time.

The summer season may require a few additional items in your emergency kit. You might wish to include tweezers for removing bee stings. Another helpful item for the summer is sunscreen. Even the cloudiest days can suddenly turn into bright sunshine leaving you in danger of being burned if you do not have an emergency bottle of sunscreen. Lotions for rashes and poison ivy are also extremely useful in the summertime.

The winter presents its own unique challenges and you might consider a few items to include in a winter emergency kit. The possibility of hypothermia exists in the winter so it is worthwhile to include a few extra articles of clothing such as wool socks, down coats, hats, gloves and even an extra sweater. This items are obviously too bulky to consider for all seasons but they can be extremely useful in the wintertime. An insulating blanket is another item to consider for your winter emergency kit. These usually fold up to be very small but can provide a great deal of protection against the wind or cold. You may also consider bringing along a -20 degree sleeping bag in your car for emergencies. Nuts are a great item to include in a winter emergency kit. Eating items high in fat can help you to stay warm by activating your metabolism. You should also carry along items for your car such as snow chains or a shovel to dig your car out if you wind up in a snowdrift.

Traveling by car can be great fun at any time of the year but you should always be prepared for the unexpected. Maintaining seasonal emergency kits can help you out a great deal if you get into trouble while traveling by car.

The Secrets to a Stress Free Vacation

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

Many people plan on their vacation being a relaxing escape from their everyday lifestyle but they return from their vacation feeling more stressed than they did before they left for their vacation. Vacations are not inherently relaxing. Believe it or not, it actually takes work to have a truly relaxing vacation. The key though is to do the majority of the work before you leave for your vacation so that everything is well planned and runs smoothly. Packing well ahead of time, carefully planning your itineraries and dealing well with changes can help you to fully enjoy your vacation.

Many vacations spend the last night before their vacation frantically packing for their trip. Procrastinating with your packing can lead to a very stressful situation. If you are up late the night before your trip or don’t get any sleep at all because you put off packing until the last minute you could be starting your vacation on a sour note. Being overtired at the start of your vacation could result in you losing precious time during your vacation because you are too tired to go out and enjoy the sites of your vacation destination. To avoid this stress and the possibility of beginning your vacation feeling overwhelmed trying packing at least a week in advance for your vacation. This gives you the peace of mind of knowing that you aren’t forgetting anything and it will also help you to get a good night sleep the night before your trip because you won’t be concerned about taking care of last minute details such as packing.

Planning your itinerary out carefully before leaving for your vacation can also help you to relax on your vacation. Again, this should be done a few days before your trip so that it does not contribute to last minute stress. Research some of the popular attractions in the area of your vacation destination and choose a few activities that you would like to participate in or a few landmarks that you would like to see while you are on vacation. Once you have a good idea of what you would like to do on your vacation, you could start planning out your daily activities. In making these plans, you should be careful not to overbook your days. Trying to pack too much adventure into your day can lead to stress that prevents you from enjoying your vacation.

Another tip for avoiding stress on your vacation is to be flexible. You are bound to run into a few snags on your vacation and if you are flexible and roll with the changes you are far more likely to enjoy your vacation than if you become upset or stressed out over mishaps. It is important to remember that your vacation is intended to be fun and relaxing so don’t worry too much about the details. As long as you are enjoying yourself, that is all that matters.

If you allow them to be, vacations can be very stressful. The secrets to avoiding stress on your vacation is to pack well ahead of time so you won’t feel stressed out at the start of your vacation, plan your itineraries carefully so that you are not trying to do too much each day and don’t let changes or mishaps dampen your spirits.
