Tips for Last Minute Travel

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Last MinuteMany airlines and hotels are willing to offer deals to last minute travelers.  If you are willing to be flexible, you may find that you can find a very affordable travel option.  When flights and hotels aren’t completely booked the airlines and hotels realize that they will not make any money on these seats or rooms if they are not occupied so they become willing to offer discounted rates to last minute travelers in order to generate a profit from these seats or rooms.  There are often certain restrictions attached to the travel dates of these last minute getaways but if you maintain an open schedule you may find yourself enjoying a relaxing and affordable vacation.

Many airlines make their discounted fares for the following weekend available at about mid week.  These fares usually involve a Saturday departure and a Monday or Tuesday return.  If you have the flexibility to take on of these trips, you may find yourself off to a vacation at a very affordable price.  If you don’t already receive these discounted fares via email visit the airline website and see if they have an email list that you can join where they send out there discounted air fares on a weekly basis.  This can save you the trouble of having to visit the website of each individual airline to see who currently has specials.  You can often even choose your departure location when you sign up and elect to only receive updates on fares departing from that location.

Another tip for last minute travel is to keep a small travel bag packed.  If you are waiting for a great deal on a beach vacation, pack a weekend getaway bag with everything that you will need for your beach vacation and keep the back stored in your closet.  Sometimes would be travelers see appealing airfares for the next couple of days but end up passing on the trip because they start to think of all the packing that they would have to do and decide that a last minute trip will be too stressful.  If you have a bag packed and ready for a specific destination, you will be ready to go if the opportunity presents itself.  Knowing that you are already packed for a vacation makes it that much easier to make the decision to make a last minute getaway.

If you have adventurous children, booking a last minute vacation may not be a problem at all.  If your children share your spirit of adventure and are willing to head out on a vacation at a moments notice than there is no reason to pass up last minute travel deals.  However, if your children are resistant to chance and unscheduled activities are likely to make them nervous, than last minute travel may not be a good idea.

If you have pets, last minute travel can be difficult.  Finding a sitter for your animals on short notice can be difficult.  For this reason you should have several friends with whom you swap pet sitting favor with on a regular basis.  If you know you have at least a few people you can count on for reliable pet sitting, it is much easier to decide on a whim to take a last minute vacation.

Traveling at the last minute can be a very affordable option.  If you are flexible and willing to make compromises, you may find that last minute travel is an exciting way to travel.  Here you and your partners can leave on a whim at a moments notice and enjoy an incredible adventure together.

Tips for Traveling with Teenagers

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

In some ways traveling with teenagers can be more difficult than traveling with young children.  While young children require constant supervision teenagers are old enough to do some activities on their own but unfortunately this is part of the problem with traveling with teenagers.  There growing independence makes them want to explore on their own instead of staying with the family but this can be dangerous on a vacation when they may not be familiar with the area or the local customs when you are traveling abroad.  There are some tips for helping to keep the peace during family vacations that involve teenagers.

The first tip for traveling with teenagers is to offer them some limited freedom.  It is understandable that children of this age may not want to spend the entire trip with the family and may want some time to explore on their own.  Allowing a teenager to explore on their own or even with another teenager can be dangerous.  If they are unfamiliar with the area, they could easily become lost.  One way to compromise in this situation is to offer to allow them to explore on their own in a confined environment where there is little chance of them getting lost.  A museum is a good example of such a location.  Here you can explore part of the museum together and then split up to allow your teenager some freedom.  Since a museum is only one building it is highly unlikely that your child will become lost but even if they do, the museum staff will likely be able to locate them pretty quickly.  Set up a meeting time and location and if your teenager does not return to this location at the agreed upon time, the staff can help you to locate your child if they are having difficulty finding their way back to the meeting location.

A beach can be very dangerous but still your teenager may want some freedom.  It is always recommended that those who opt to swim in the ocean do so with a buddy.  If you have more than one teenager, give them strict instructions to stay together in the water so that they can look out for each other.  You should also set some ground rules for while you are on the beach.  First have your teenager check in with you ever twenty minutes or so which will give you the opportunity to verify that they are okay.  Next tell them that they are only permitted to swim in the area of the ocean that is under lifeguard supervision.  Finally, if the beach extends for several miles in either direction, instruct them not to wander too far away from the rest of the family.  Having them keep you in sight is a good idea.

Allowing teenagers to explore unfamiliar cities after dark is just not safe.  They may want to do so but this is one aspect where there is no room for compromise.  If there are nightclubs geared for teenagers at your vacation destination and your child wishes to participate, you can let them under the conditions that you drive them to the nightclub and that they call you when they are ready to go home so that you can pick you up.  Instruct them to wait inside until you arrive.  Although many cities are safe for teenagers it is better not to take chances.

Traveling with teenagers can be a trying experience.  They want to enjoy certain freedoms and may not always understand that being somewhere unfamiliar requires some additional precautions.  Making compromises and setting ground rules are critical to having an enjoyable vacation with your teenager.

Tips for Airplane Travel with Toddlers

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

AirplaneTraveling by airplane with young children can be very difficult.  Unlike car travel where you have the opportunity to stop every few hours to allow your toddler to exercise, an airplane confines you to a relatively small space for the duration of the flight.  If you have a particularly long flight, this can be very difficult.  Even flights of two hours in length can seem much longer when you have a cranky toddler on your hands.  There are, however, a few tips for making airplane travel more comfortable and enjoyable for you, your toddler and your fellow passengers.

The first tip is to consider purchasing a seat for your toddler on your flight.  Many airlines do not require children under a certain age to have their own seat.  Although you are allowed to travel with your child on your lap, this may not be the most comfortable way to travel for you, your child or your neighbor.  Airplane seats are very small and adding an additional person, albeit a small child to this situation can make things uncomfortable for everyone involved.  Many airlines have three seats per section and if there are three travelers in your party, including your child, you may have the luxury of purchasing a seat for your child between you and your traveling companion.  This will give you and your companion a little more mobility and will make your child as comfortable as possible.

Longer flights can be very difficult for young children.  Try to bring along games or toys that will keep them entertained.  If they enjoy watching movies and you have a portable DVD player, you could bring along a few favorite movies for your child to watch during the flight.  This may help to keep them occupied for significant stretches of time.  This is particularly effective if the child has not watched their favorite DVDs in a few days.

The food available on airplanes is usually pretty limited so it advisable to bring along nutritious snacks to keep your child from being hungry.  Milk and all natural juices are good beverage choices.  Also snacks of fruit, cheese or crackers are convenient for travel and nutritious for your child.  Avoid giving your child sugary snacks such as sodas and candy because these can make your child feel over stimulated.

It is very likely that your child will begin to annoy your neighbors if he does not behave well on the trip.  In the best case scenario, you will be seated near someone who loves children and may help to keep your child entertained but there is always the possibility that you will be seated near someone who is easily annoyed and not tolerant of children.  In either case it is best to be polite to your neighbor, acknowledge your child’s behavior and let them know you are doing everything possible to keep your child still.

Bringing along a change of clothes and spare diapers is a must when traveling with children.  Although the space for changing your child is very limited, in an emergency situation, you may have to make due and figure out a creative way to change your child if their diaper leaks.  Also, bring along zip lock plastic bags to put dirty diaper or soiled clothing into if you do have to change your child.  This will help to contain offensive odors.

Traveling by airplane with children can be difficult but proper preparation can ease the difficulty.  Planning ahead and brining along necessities for entertainment and nutrition can help to keep your child calm and happy for the duration of the flight.

Best Beach Vacations

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

If you are looking to travel to a tropical destination, you may be interested in knowing where some of the best beaches in the world are located.  Some may argue that any beach is a good beach.  Sure the warm sand and relaxing sounds of the ocean combined with the cooling breezes coming off the ocean can make an beach vacation seem like paradise but there really are some beaches that stand out from the rest.  This article will outline only a handful of the world’s best beaches.

The Riviera Maya is becoming an increasingly popular location for those travelers in search of a beach vacation.  Those who travel to this destination are treated to beautiful beaches that also offer the appeal of being surrounded by the ancient ruins of Mayan history.  Tulum Beach is one of the best for enjoying the beauty of the beach while also soaking in the ancient surroundings.  The ancient city of Tulum was a walled city and many of the ruins still stand and surround this beautiful beach giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy a unique combination of beach and history in their vacation.

Bora Bora offers isolation that makes any beach on this island romantic.  Surprisingly though the beaches of Bora Bora are not as beautiful as some may expect.  However, what the island lacks in beautiful beaches, it makes up in providing its inhabitants access to crystal clear, warm waters in a surrounding where they can feel like the only people on the island.  The exception to high quality beaches though is Matira Point on the southern tip of the island.  Here you can enjoy white sand beaches with a panoramic view of the surrounding cliffs.  The scenic surroundings combined with the seclusion of this beach makes this beach an excellent romantic beach destination.

If you are looking for a beach that is filled with fun, activity and parties you may need to look no farther than the beaches of Mykonos Island, Greece.   The beaches of Paradise and Super Paradise in particular are filled with beach dwellers in search of a good party.  Here the music is loud and the clothing is optional.  This hedonistic beach is definitely not for families or those of the faint of heart.

There are, however, beaches that are perfect for family fun.  If you are looking for a family friend beach, Palm Beach in Aruba is an excellent alternative.  The beaches here offer mild of flat beaches and calm waters that make the beaches and the ocean safe for children.  Although children should always be supervised when they are in and around the water, the landscape makes these beaches very safe for children.

Whether you are looking for a glimpse into history, a romantic getaway, a hedonistic party or a family friendly atmosphere there is a beach that is just perfect for you.  Whatever your needs are, with a little research you are sure to find a beach that suits your needs.  The beaches chronicled in this article are only a very small sample of the world’s best beaches.  There are so many more beautiful beaches that offer a unique appeal.

Things to See When Traveling to London

Friday, May 19th, 2006

London is filled with tourist attractions and historic landmarks that make it almost impossible to see and do everything that this city has to offer.  If you only visit this city for a few days, you will very likely have to be selective about which attractions you visit because there is just too much to do and see in such a limited amount of time.  An organized tour led by a knowledgeable guide may be a great idea for those who are pressed for time on their trip to London.  These guides know the city well and are very experienced at packing a great deal of attractions into a very limited amount of time.  The downside to this kind of travel, however, is that you don’t have much freedom.  If you want to linger at a particular location you risk being left behind by the group and possibly losing your transportation back to your hotel.  Those adventurous souls who prefer to explore at their own pace would be wise to choose a self guided tour.

Deciding what to see and do in London is no small task.  The city has so much to offer in terms of the arts, theater, museums, shopping and restaurants.  Doing your research before hand can help you to determine just what you want to do so that you don’t waste any of your time on your vacation deciding what to do next.  Carefully, mapping out an itinerary before hand will help you to make the most of your vacation in London

Whether you opt to do your research through travel guides, the Internet or advice from friends and family members who have made a similar voyage, you are sure to find a few key tourist attractions that cannot be missed when you travel to London

Buckingham Palace is among the tourist attractions that make London famous.  Travelers are fascinated with the monarchy of London and having the opportunity to see the palace first hand and witness the changing of the guard can be an experience of a lifetime.  Viewing the palace from outside is a treat in and of itself but during Aug. and Sept. travelers to London have the opportunity to take guided tours through some of the staterooms of the palace.

Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral are two other attractions that travelers to London should plan on visiting.  Westminster Abbey is a famous burial ground for monarchs but cultural icons such as Handel and Chaucer are also buried in this famed location.

The London Eye which stands approximately 450 feet above the ground gives visitor a unique perspective on London.  Viewing the city from this height gives you an unobstructed view of the city and its surroundings.  This Ferris wheel type structure gives visitors a unique way to view the city in a glass enclosed compartment.

Besides these key attractions, London also offers a thriving theater district, fine dining restaurants and a host of other attractions such as museums and shopping.  Although the weather in London may not always be favorable, it is hard to deny the beauty and charm of this city.

When in Rome

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

As the popular expression goes, when in Rome do as the Romans do but what exactly do they do.  Rome is one city that visitors to Italy simply cannot miss.  More than any other city Rome offers a unique look at its history through your everyday surroundings.  Of course you can always visit the fabled ruins and museums and other historically significant locations but the city itself offers an undeniable historic charm.  Native Romans live their history on a daily basis.  They are surrounded by their history and it is reflected in their daily lives.

The historic ruins and museums filled with masterpieces should definitely be visited when you are in Rome.  Here you can see some of the greatest masterpieces of historic and modern times.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the ancient architecture and view the work of some of the worlds artistic masters.  For this reason, you should not miss the chance to view these masterpieces first hand.  These works of art and historic pieces of architecture give you a glimpse into the opulence of ancient Rome where powerful emperors ruled the land.

The museums and ruins, however, are not the only way to experience the rich history of Rome of antiquity.  The natives of Rome live their history as they go about their daily business.  Following their lead can give you a unique glimpse into the history of Rome and also offers the opportunity to experience the more modern aspects of Rome.  Just walking through the city with your eyes wide open and being aware of your surroundings are the keys to experiencing the history of Rome as the natives do.  Much of the city of Rome remains true to its original structures.  The town squares are still the original designs of ancient architects, many opulent palaces have been converted to hotels filled with modern conveniences and luxurious accommodations but really being cognizant of where you are will allow you to see the beauty of the history that surrounds you.  Simple walks in local parks can take you wandering through historic cemeteries and mausoleums.  Enjoying your coffee at an outdoor table in a downtown coffee bar may put your right in the middle of a square that was designed by one of the ancient masters.  Many guide books will tell you where to go and what museums to visit to see some of the great works of art of ancient Rome but simply wandering the city will put you in touch with the history of the common man in Rome.  Here you will come to understand where and how they lived.

The city of Rome offers the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the city’s history without visiting museums or tourist attractions.  These locations are certainly worth visiting but they aren’t the only way to experience the history and culture of Rome.  If you keep your eyes open and remain aware of your surroundings while you travel in Rome, you are sure to experience the history in a truly unique way.

The city of Anchorage is one of Alaska’s most bustling cities.  Those who make the decision to visit Alaska would be remiss in not stopping in Anchorage for at least part of their trip.  Although Anchorage is a relatively new city, it still offers a great deal of appeal to tourists.  The majority of the development of Anchorage has taken place in the last fifty years or so.  For this reason you are very unlikely to see some of the historic buildings and landmarks that most major tourist attractions are famous for offering.  Anchorage has so much more to offer to its visitors.  Traveling to Anchorage, Alaska is like traveling to no other city in the United States and it is sure to be an adventure that you may never forget.

Safety Tips for Solo Travelers

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Traveling by yourself can be a wonderful experience.  Without a travel companion or companions you are completely free to enjoy your travels as you see fit.  There are absolutely no restrictions and you don’t have to worry about making group decisions about where to go next or what to do next.  While this can be a great experience, there are some inherent dangers that are involved with traveling alone.  When you are in a group or with at least one other companion, you are less likely to be accosted on your trip because those with ill intentions like to prey on those that they see as week.  While you may truly enjoy traveling alone and may have the confidence to do so and be fully capable of doing so, the fact that you are alone does make you somewhat vulnerable.  The tips in this article aren’t intended to scare you out of traveling solo but to inform you of how to do so safely.

Not looking like a tourist is critical to traveling alone.  If you are alone and clearly stand out as a tourist, you may make yourself in danger of being pickpocketed or being the victim of another crime.  If you are traveling to a foreign country your ethnicity may make it impossible for you to completely blend in an appear as a native but you should at least walk with confidence and pretend like you know exactly where you are going even if you are somewhat lost.  Pulling out a map and trying to figure out where you makes you an easy target.  You are distracted plus it is clear that you don’t know where you are going so criminals may seize this opportunity to harm you in some way.

The way you dress while traveling solo can also put you at risk.  To be safe, try to avoid dressing like a tourist.  You will want to blend in with the locals so if you have a chance beforehand, research the style of the city and try to pack appropriately.  Stay away from designer labels and expensive jewelry that may make you a robbery target.  Instead stick to smart and sophisticated clothing that is moderately priced.

While on your trip, be cautious not to advertise the fact that you are traveling solo.  This information may not necessarily be harmful but if you make the mistake of telling someone who could potentially harm you that you are alone, they may be more prone to commit a crime against you.

Avoid desolate areas after dark.  Ideally, you should end your day and retire to your hotel room before sunset each night.  This may cut down on your nightlife but it is far better than ending up on a dark, isolated street when you are all alone.

Finally, always leave a tentative itinerary with a trusted friend or family member at home.  Although your plans may change, it is wise to have someone who knows where you are expected to be each day in case something does happen.  If you no in advance that you are making changes to the itinerary, it is a good idea to call that friend or family member and give them an update on your new plans.

Traveling solo can be a lot of fun and a great way to enjoy a vacation but there are a few extra precautions that you should take.  Just being alert and aware of your surroundings, trying to blend in with the natives, dressing appropriately and using common sense can all help you to remain safe when you are traveling alone.

Tips for Traveling with a Large Group

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

Traveling with a large GroupTraveling with a large group of people can be a very stressful situation. You are likely to get group discounts if you have a large group and you always have others around to share in activities with you when you travel with a large group but there are also major disadvantages in this situation. Some of these disadvantages include having to organize a large group before you head out to a restaurant or an entertainment venue. You also have more people around which means there are more opinions about what the group should be doing. This can all make for a very stressful trip but there are a few tips for making the most of travel with a large group.

Organizing a large group for any activity can be extremely difficult. If you are traveling with several other people and plan to meet up for meals or other activities it is very likely that there will be a few stragglers who arrive late at each meeting time. This can be very frustrating for those who are typically on time for meetings. If it is the same individuals who are always late, you might consider giving them an early meeting time than everyone else to account for their lateness resulting in them arriving late for the time you told them but on time to meet with everyone else. If the stragglers are not usually the same people, it may just be time to accept the fact that others will always be late and to try to be understanding of their situation. You might also suggest meeting at the location of the restaurant so that those who are punctual can order drinks and appetizers while they are waiting for the others to arrive. Or if you are going to an entertainment location together you can arrange to meet at the facility so that you can enjoy the entertainment while you wait for the rest of your group to arrive.

Another tip for traveling with a large group is to have a meeting beforehand to discuss the itineraries. This will give everyone the opportunity to voice their opinions so that no one feels as though they didn’t have any say in the group activities. Voting on what you will do each day or having each day be decided by a smaller group of the whole party is a fair way to decide on activities.

Arranging for time for the group to break into smaller groups or for individuals to enjoy their own activities is also important. If you and the other members of your party spend the entire trip together you are likely to drive each other crazy. For this reason it is important to schedule some downtime where there are no group activities.

A large group is likely to consist of several age groups and this should be remembered when planning activities. For example a group volleyball tournament may not be the best option if there are several elderly members of the group. Likewise a trip to hear a symphony play may not be a great activity if there are very young children in the group. Although they may enjoy the music initially it is highly unlikely that they will have the attention span to enjoy the entire show.

Traveling with a large group can be stressful but it doesn’t have to be. If you and the other members in the group plan well and are considerate of each other you may find that a group vacation can be very enjoyable.
