Packing for a Winter Weekend Getaway

Friday, June 30th, 2006

A long weekend in the mountains doing some skiing, snowshoeing or snowboarding can be an excellent vacation idea.  Usually you don’t have to travel very far for these types of vacations and the long weekend may be just enough time to relax and unwind without getting to the point where you start to become fatigued from your vacation.  The other great aspect of the winter weekend getaway is that you don’t have to worry about packing very much.  There are some essential items that you should be sure to bring along but the relatively short duration of a long weekend trip, means that the packing will be relatively light.  Winter equipment can be bulky but the good news is that you only have to pack enough for a few days of fun as opposed to longer trips where you will have to pack for a week or longer.

You may need sport specific equipment if you are planning to participate in sports such as skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing while on your winter getaway unless you plan to rent all of your equipment.  However, if you want to use your own equipment you will want to pack everything you will need.  Skiers should bring along their skis, boots, poles and any additional miscellaneous equipment that they may use such as a lock and bag for their skis.  Snowboards should bring along their snowboards, boots and any miscellaneous items.  If you plan to do some snowshoeing or even if there is just the possibility that you might you should bring along your snowshoes as well as a pair of waterproof boots that are comfortable for snowshoeing.

In addition to your sporting equipment you will also need to pack clothes for your vacation.  You can usually count on the weather being cold when you embark on a winter weekend getaway but you should prepare for weather that is unseasonably warm.  Packing sweaters, vests, long sleeved shirts along with heavy and light weight pairs of pants, a winter jackets, hat, gloves and a scarf will ensure that you are prepared for all types of weather.  You should also bring along a pair of waterproof boots that are comfortable for walking and heavyweight wool socks that fit well under your boots.  Depending on whether or not you have intentions of going out to dinner at finer restaurants or not will determine whether or not you bring along fancier clothes.  Even if you don’t plan to dine in finer restaurants, you might still consider bringing along one nicer outfit just in case you change your mind.

Packing for a weekend getaway filled with winter activities can be complicated if you plan to bring along your own equipment. You can, however, simplify things by planning to rent your sporting gear and just packing your clothing and personal items.  In terms of clothes, you will need to pack for the extreme cold and also include a few lighter pieces in case the weather is unseasonably warm.  Doing this will give you the opportunity to layer to achieve the desired warmness.

Packing for a Tropical Weekend Getaway

Monday, June 26th, 2006

A weekend getaway at a tropical location can be just what you need to help you forget about the stresses of everyday life for a couple of days and to completely relax and enjoy your vacation.  Packing for this type of vacation doesn’t have to be stressful or time consuming.  There are certain items you will want to be sure to bring for the beach, dinner, nighttime entertainment, shopping or other activities and this article will detail some of the critical items you should be sure to bring along for your tropical weekend getaway.

Chances are you will spend the majority of the time during your tropical getaway on the beach.  For this reason you should be sure to pack everything that you need for spending your days on the beach.  A swimsuit is one obvious choice to pack for this vacation.  You can either bring along one bathing suit for each day you plan to spend on the beach or you could just bring one and rinse and dry the bathing suit each night.  Besides your bathing suit, you should also bring a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect you from the sun’s rays.  You may also want to bring a beach towel if they are not provided by the resort where you are staying.  These are just some of the basics but you may also consider bringing along a t-shirt or other clothing in case you want o be less exposed to the sun in the afternoon.  You will also definitely want to either bring along sunscreen or plan on purchasing it right away.  Books, magazines and other forms of entertainment are other items that you might consider packing for when you are on the beach.

You will also need to pack for dinners and nights on the town.  Beach towns are usually not very formal but if your resort has a restaurant onsite you might want to inquire as to whether or not there is a dress code so you can be sure to bring along appropriate attire.  For women, sundresses with sandals or high heels may be appropriate while men will most likely feel comfortable in khakis and a polo shirt with a pair of dress shoes.  These outfits are usually appropriate for both dinner and nightclubs.

If you plan on doing some shopping during your tropical getaway, you will have to pack clothing for that excursion.  It is usually not appropriate to walk in and out of shops in your bathing suit so you might want to bring along comfortable clothing that can be worn over your bathing suit for when you want to go into town to do some shopping.  Short and t-shirts are usually appropriate for both men and women and women can also wear skirts, sundresses or cover ups over their bathing suits.

In addition to your clothing and beach items you should also pack a toiletry bag.  Here you can include items such as a hairbrush, toothpaste, your toothbrush, cosmetics and anything else you might need.  Most likely you can pick up these items in the resort gift shop but he items may be very expensive if you purchase them there so it is better to try to remember to pack these items.

You don’t need to pack much for a tropical getaway but you should take care to ensure that you are properly prepared for all occasions.  Clothing, entertainment items and toiletries are some of the most basic items that you may need during your trip.

The Plan As You Go Vacation

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

One incredibly fun way to travel is to plan everything as you go.  Most people are under the mistaken impression that travel has to be carefully planned at that itineraries must be followed exactly.  While carefully planning out every detail of your travels can be an excellent way to travel there is something to be said about leaving things to chance and making decisions on the fly about where you will go and what you will do.

Last minute airfares are an excellent excuse to embark on a plan as you go vacation.  These discounted airfares are usually announced in the middle of the week and they usually have a Friday departure and a Monday or Tuesday return.  If you don’t already subscribe to these rates for several airlines so that you will receive a listing of weekly airfare discounts in your email.  Just choose an airfare that is affordable and will take you to a vacation destination that you have always wanted to try.  Once you book your flight you will have taken the first step to taking a completely unplanned vacation.

These discounted airfares usually become available in the middle of the week and depart on a Saturday which means that once you reserve your flight, you will have a couple of days to pack for your trip.  If you chose a location that requires special clothing such as the beach or a ski resort in the winter you may need to pick up a few essential items before beginning your trip.  If the location that you have chosen doesn’t require any special or specific clothing you might even consider not even packing for the trip.  You could add to the fun by planning to by everything you need when you reach your destination.

It’s very common for travelers to research their travel destination and carefully plan out the activities that they would like to participate in and the landmarks that they would like to visit while on vacation but this isn’t always necessary.  You may find that not planning so meticulously adds to the fun of the adventure.  In fact not making an itinerary at all and not researching the popular tourist attractions will give you the freedom to wait until you arrive and choose any activities that sound appealing.

Many travelers research the available dining options available at their destination before they even begin their trip.  This can give them a good idea of what restaurants to patronize while on vacation.  However, this too can be skipped.  Leaving your options open gives you the freedom to experiment more and choose restaurants that are not as well known.  Asking the locals for restaurant recommendations can help you to avoid overpriced, tourist traps.  The other advantage is that following the recommendation of a local will most likely lead to an excellent meal at an establishment that is not overcrowded.

Not all travel has to be carefully planned out.  If you are a free spirit you may find that you enjoy traveling on a whim.  You may also find that making decisions about where to go, where to stay, where to eat and what to do during your adventure can be a very rewarding experience.

The Joy of a Road Trip

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

RoadIt may seem odd but there is perhaps no better way to travel than on a road trip.  You may think that road trips are only for teenagers and young adults who do not have the means to travel any other way.  The thought of traveling cross country in your automobile may not appeal to you at first but if you give it a chance you may discover that a cross country road trip is the vacation of a lifetime.  Whether you embark on your road trip with a carefully planned out itinerary or with no plan at all, you are likely to find that your adventure is a memorable one.

Deciding to take a lengthy road trip can be a significant decision.  You are deciding that you are willing to load everything that you need into your vehicle and spend some time learning about yourself through your adventure.  Just because you’re planning a road trip for your vacation doesn’t mean you have to just jump in your car without making any plans.  You are certainly welcome to map out every mile of your trip and stick to your plan like clockwork.  This may be an excellent way to travel if there are definite landmarks that you want to be sure to visit or if you have limited time and need to remain on a tight schedule to ensure that you see and experience all that you hoped to see on this trip.  If this is your style, you can certainly map out your mileage for each day, plan which attractions you will visit and how much time you will spend at each attraction and plan and make advanced reservations for each of your hotel stops.  You may even wish to locate restaurants along the way that you may wish to visit during your road trip.

A road trip doesn’t have to be carefully planned to be successful.  In fact some of the best road trips are taken on a whim with little or no advanced planning.  If traveling without making plans is your style, you may find yourself enjoy one of the best vacations of your life on your road trip.  Although schedules and plans can always be modified, when you travel without any plans, schedules or expectations you may find that fun and adventure finds you.  With this kind of trip, you are not obligated to make any stops or to leave a particular location before you have finished exploring.  You may miss out on a few key landmarks traveling this way but you may find more adventure as well.

A road trip isn’t just for teenagers and young adults looking to find themselves and learn about themselves.  A road trip can be an enjoyable vacation idea for adults who are looking to explore neighboring states in an original way.  Flying from destination to destination can get you from point A to point B very quickly but when you choose air travel as your mode of transportation you miss out on enjoying your transportation as part of the adventure.

Exercising While You are Traveling

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

Finding time to exercise while you are traveling isn’t always easy.   You won’t always have easy access to a fully stocked gym filled with cardiovascular machines, dumbbells and weight lifting machines.  The key to exercising when you are traveling is to be creative and to be open to different forms of exercise than you are used to performing at home.  There is some portable equipment that can be used while you are traveling and you might be able to find access to a gym if you are creative.

The most important tip for getting in some exercise while you are traveling is to plan to exercise while you are traveling.  Pack sneakers and exercise clothes so that you are prepared if the opportunity to exercise presents itself.  There is also equipment that is easy to pack when you travel and can provide you with the ability to do some cardiovascular exercise as well as some resistance training.  Resistance bands are items that are very easy to pack and can be used to perform a variety of resistance exercises.  These bands won’t take up much space in your suitcase and they are very lightweight.  A jump rope is another easy item to pack to use for squeezing in some exercise when you are traveling.  Waking up early to go outside and jump rope for 15-20 minutes can be a great form of exercise for when you are traveling.  There are also weights that you fill with water that are easy to pack in your suitcase for use when you are traveling.  You can travel with them empty and fill them up when you reach your hotel to use them while you are there.  When it’s time to return home, you simply let out the water and they are once again easy to pack.

If you belong to a gym that is a chain you may find that you are eligible to work out at a chain near your vacation destination for a discounted price or possibly even for free.  It’s a good idea to call the gym that is near your vacation spot and ask them about their availability.  The worst that can happen is that they say no but if you call them personally you may be surprised to find that they are willing to make an exception for you.

Running outside is another excellent form of exercise for when you are traveling.  Many gym members get used to doing all their running on a treadmill and forget that running outside is always an option.  Even if you can’t get to a gym during your travels, you can still get an excellent workout.  Do a little advanced research to see if there are any trails nearby that might be fun to run on.  If you are unable to find anything ahead of time, try asking the concierge and he might be able to point you in the right direction.

Traveling is no excuse for not getting your daily exercise.  There are many ways to exercise while you are on vacation.  Sometimes it takes a little creativity but you are likely to find a way to work out while you are traveling if you really want to do so.

Eating Healthy While Traveling

Monday, June 12th, 2006

If you are on a diet or simply trying to eat healthy a vacation can be a difficult time for you.  Many travelers eat most if not all of their meals in restaurants while they are on vacation.  This can wreak havoc your diet because you don’t always have complete control over what goes into restaurant food.  Many restaurant meals are filled with fat and are not properly proportioned so you could easily consume many additional calories each day.  There are, however, some tips for helping you to maintain healthy eating habits while you are traveling.

Ordering half portions or sharing an entrée with a friend can help you to reduce your calorie consumption when you are traveling.  Be sure to ask your server if they offer half portions.  This could not only help you to eat healthier but it could be beneficial to your budget as well.  If they do not offer half portions and you do not have a travel companion to share your meal, consider ordering an appetizer as your main course or asking the server to put half of your meal in a doggie bag before he serves the entrees.  This will keep you from being tempted to eat the entire oversized portion.

Being away of cooking terms may also help you to make health conscious choices when you are choosing items from a menu.  For example anything that is fried is likely to be laden with calories and fat while baked items are likely to be much lower in fat and calories.  If you do not understand a term ask the server what it means so that you can determine whether or not it is a high fat cooking method or not.

Asking for your dressing to be served on the side of your salad can also help you to maintain your diet while traveling and eating in restaurants.  Many dressings are high calorie to begin with and restaurants routinely put large servings of dressing on their salads.  Having the dressing on the salad gives you the ability to use the dressing sparingly.  One way to do this is to dip your fork into the dressing before each bite of salad instead of pouring the dressing over your salad.  You will have a bit of dressing with each bite but will consume far less calories.

If you have the option to cook while you are traveling you can eat much healthier.  You may not want to interrupt the peace and tranquility of your vacation by cooking for yourself but doing so can result in a tremendous calorie savings over the course of your trip.  Substituting even a couple of homemade meals for restaurant ones can help you to eat healthier while you are traveling.

Many vacations tend to overeat during breakfast.  Try packing non-perishable breakfast items such as protein bars or other snack items instead of going out to breakfast each morning.  This will help you to eat healthier while you are traveling.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while you travel isn’t always possible but there are a few tips for keeping you from going too far overboard with your eating and consuming far too many calories while you are on vacation.

Traveling When You are Pregnant

Friday, June 9th, 2006

Being pregnant doesn’t automatically mean that you have to cancel all of your travel plans.  In fact traveling when you are pregnant can be a wonderful experience.  There are some tips though to make your travel as enjoyable as possible while also remaining safe.  The time when you travel is very important to consider before planning your trip.  Also, maintaining your health while you travel is critical.  There are a few tips for helping to ensure your health while on vacation.  For the most part they are all precautions that you should already be taking but it doesn’t hurt to reinforce these precautions when you are traveling.

The timing of your vacation is important when you are pregnant.  If you plan to fly to your vacation destination, it is important to check the airline’s policy regarding pregnant women before you book your reservations.  Many airlines do not allow women who are beyond 36 weeks to fly.  Some airlines may also require you to submit a doctors note if you are more than 28 weeks pregnant.  If you are unsure of your airline’s policies contact a customer service representative to ask about whether or not you will be eligible to travel.  Besides airline regulations, your personal comfort should be considered when planning a vacation while you are pregnant.  Many women find their second trimester the ideal time to travel.  Many women are plagued by morning sickness during their first trimester and very tired during their third trimester.  However, by their second trimester morning sickness has usually subsided but fatigue has not yet set in making this a great time to travel.  Every woman is different though and you may feel ready to travel at a different time.

It is also important to maintain adequate circulation while you are flying.  Pregnant women are particularly prone to poor circulation so if you are flying, make a point of standing up and walking the length of the airplane once or twice every hour of your flight.  If you are driving to your vacation destination, be prepared to make frequent stops to get out of the car and walk around a little

Maintaining proper hydration levels is also important when you are traveling while you are pregnant.  Many travelers forget to drink water while they are on vacation but pregnant women cannot afford to do so.  Carry bottled water with you wherever you go and maintain your hydrations levels while you are traveling.

Proper nutrition on a trip is also important for pregnant women.  It is not uncommon for those on vacation to eat large meals.  Try not to do this and instead travel with non perishable, healthy snacks so that you can eat small meals throughout the day to maintain your glucose levels.

Research the doctors at your vacation destination.  You never know when you will go into labor or require a trip to a doctor so you should be prepared by knowing where to find a doctor while you are on vacation.  You should also verify that your insurance will be valid while you are on vacation.

You don’t have to put your travel plans on hold just because you are pregnant.  As long as you are feeling ready for your trip, there is no reason not to travel.  You should, however, follow some safety precautions to ensure your health as well as the health of your baby.

Traveling on a Budget

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Traveling on a BudgetLimited financial assets don’t have to keep you from enjoying a vacation.  There are many tips for stretching your budget and enjoying a relaxing vacation that does not put a strain on your financial situation.  Whether you are looking to enjoy a weekend getaway or a month long trip to another country you can find cost saving tips that can greatly reduce the price of your trip.  Some of these tips include maintaining flexibility, booking your trip in advance or at the last minute, considering alternative modes of transportation and traveling during off peak times.

Being flexible with your travel plans can greatly reduce the cost of your travel plans.  If you are flexible with the dates of your trip you may find more opportunities to reduce the cost of your trip.  For example hotel stays are usually cheaper on weekdays than they are on weeknights.  However, airline travel is usually cheaper if you stay over a weekend night before your return trip.  In this case you need to weigh your options carefully to determine what your cheapest options are.  It may be worthwhile to include one weekend night stay in a hotel in your vacation if it will greatly reduce your airfare.

Booking flights more than three weeks is one way to help you get a better price on your airfare.  As the date of departure approaches, airfares tend to rise.  However, there are often possibilities of reduced airfares on last minute travel.  Booking your flight in advance is practically a guaranteed way to save money on your flight but waiting until the last minute is hit or miss in terms of whether or not you will find and affordable deal.  For this reason it is recommended that you make your reservations ahead of time when you are sure that you will be traveling instead of relying on a last minute deal on airfare.  Last minute deals, however, are excellent ideas for travel that is done on a whim.

Depending on the location of your travel destination you might want to consider alternative modes of transportation for your travel.  Airfare is often quite expensive but trains, buses and automobiles can be much less expensive.  They are, however, much slower so therefore they are not an option if you have limited time constraints for your vacation.  If you have time to spare though you could save a great deal of money traveling by a form of land transportation as opposed to air travel.

Traveling during off peak times can also save you a great deal of money on your vacation.  Many popular vacations have peak times and off peak times.  For example popular ski locations can be much more expensive in the winter but the mountain ranges are beautiful for hiking and mountain biking in the spring and fall.  You might find great travel deals to these locations during these times.

Travel me seem like a luxury that you just can’t afford but that is not always the case.  With a little legwork and flexibility you may find that your dream vacation is more affordable than you imagined.

Tips for Traveling with Dogs

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

Whether you are traveling with your dogs because you consider them part of your family and can’t bear to be away from them, because you were unable to find a sitter for them or because you think they will enjoy the vacation destination you may find that with a little advanced problem traveling with your dogs is not difficult.  You do have to do your research before hand to ensure that your trip with your dogs will be enjoyable.  Many hotels do not allow pets or place limitations on the amount or size of the dogs.  Also, if you are planning to travel by airplane you should do your research carefully before booking a flight.

Finding a hotel to accommodate you and your dogs isn’t hard but it should be done in advance.  Not all hotels accept dogs so it is recommended that you make your hotel reservations in advance so that you have adequate time to find a hotel in the desired area that will accept the number and size of dogs that you will be traveling with on your vacation.  Planning to make your lodging arrangements when you arrive can be problematic especially if you find that many area hotels do not accept dogs.  Even those hotels that do accept dogs may only allow dogs in certain rooms so it is a good idea to make your arrangements in advance at to make sure that the hotel staff notes that you will be traveling with dogs so that they can reserve an appropriate room for you and your pets.  Many hotels charge additional fees when you have dogs staying with you.  Sometimes these are refundable deposits that are returned to you if the room remains undamaged.  Other times the fees are nightly fees assessed per animal.  Still other hotels charge you a one time non-refundable fee that is justified by the additional cleaning that is usually required after an animal departs.

Flying with your dogs is also a part of your travel that involves advanced planning.  Depending on the size of your dog, they might be able to travel with you in the cabin or they might have to travel in an airline approved crate in the cargo portion of the airplane.  Small dogs that fit in carriers that can be placed under your seat are sometimes permitted to travel in the cabin but you should check with the airline before booking your flight.  Large dogs are almost always required to travel in a crate in the cargo department.  Again you should check with the airline because there are sometimes limitations on the amount of animals that they can carry and if there are already several dogs booked, you may have to choose another flight.  Also, some airlines place restrictions on the time of year when they will allow dogs to travel.  Some will not allow you to fly with your dogs if the temperature is too high or too low.

If your dog is going to be traveling in the cargo bay there are some tips you can take to ease the stress of their flight.  They will be confined to the safety of the crate and most baggage handlers will be aware that there is an animal in the crate but placing a “Live Animal,” sign on the crate will make sure they are aware.  You could also create a sign with your dog’s picture and name asking those who encounter the dog to say hello to them.  Sometimes just hearing their name can help your dog to relax.  Including a favorite toy in the crate can also put your dog at ease.  You may be required to check in your dog early so it is important to walk them just before you check in so that they will be comfortable for the flight.  A small blanket can also help your dog to feel comfortable while they are in their crate.

Traveling with your beloved dogs can enhance your travel experience.  There are, however, a few precautions to take when doing so.  These precautions will help to make the trip enjoyable for you and your pet.
