The most significant times in the history of Prague included the rule of Charles the IV, which was during the fourteenth century and who was one of the frontrunners in establishing many of the institutions that make Prague what it is today. Similarly, the reign of Rudolf II was one of the most important for encouraging art, science and philosophy in the country. Any visit to the country would not be complete without a visit to Prague. Hiring a car here will make the city all the more accessible, although it is also easy to negotiate on foot. Aside from Prague, there are many smaller examples of towns in the country that will more clearly demonstrate some of the ancient rituals of the country’s past. Many of these are brewery towns, such as Plzen and Ceske Budejovice, where you can best sample the Czechs’ finest export – ‘pivo’ or beer. You should also leave some room to sample some of the local delicacies, which include fruit filled dumplings and apple strudel.
