The historical town of Arles is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southern France, just below where the Rhône River splits into two separate branches. The region has been populated since around 800 BCE, making this a popular tourist destination today, thanks to the many historical attractions that can be found here.
Interestingly, the town of Arles – as well as the surrounding countryside – served as a major inspiration for painters Van Gogh and Gauguin, so be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit and take in some of the same sights that invigorated these great artistes! Also of note, a Roman theatre, amphitheatre, necropolis, and obelisk can be found here, as can the magnificent Romanesque Church of St. Trophime, which boasts the stunning Last Judgment sculpture on its façade. In addition, Arles is home to a wonderful museum of ancient history, known as the Musée de l’ Arles et de la Provence antiques |
