The town of Agen lies along the banks of the Garonne River in the Aquitaine region of southwestern France. It is the capital of the Lot-et-Garonne department and is situated just over 130 kilometers from the city of Bordeaux. Inhabited since medieval times, the town boasts a number of popular tourist attractions that are a testament to its rich history.
While visiting Agen, be sure to check out the 12th century Agen Cathedral, which is dedicated to Saint Caprasius and is one of very few churches in the entire country that features a double nave. Also of note, the Musée des Beaux Arts, or ‘Fine Arts Museum,’ boasts a number of items that can be dated all the way back to prehistoric times, and it is also home to more than 300 works by the famed artiste, Goya. In addition, the Saint Hilaire church features unusual statues of Moses and St. Peter, while the Canal des Deux Mers crosses Agen and connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. |
