The town of Alencon in France is located in southern Normandy at the entrance to the Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park, and has been well-known for its lace-making since the 17th century. The Grand Rue in the old town is still lined with 18th century houses, and tourists thrill at the sight of the Chateau des Ducs, although it is currently closed to visitors.
Since 2005, Alencon has been linked to the autoroute system, making this a wonderful weekend destination, as it lies a mere 169 km west of Paris, France. The town was heavily damaged during World War II, but still boasts the late-period Gothic churches of Saint Leonard and Notre Dame. In addition, the attractive town centre and the portion of the town that runs along the Sarthe River are both popular areas to explore, but be sure you don’t miss the beautiful gardens, parks and fountains scattered throughout this enclave as well.
