A pretty, friendly town, Angers is the capital of the ancient county of Anjou in France. Situated on the banks of the Maine river, which spills into the Loire river just south of the city, Angers has long held the nickname “Black Angers,” due to the dark-colored slate and other stone that has been quarried here since the 9th century.
Angers is known for having a lively atmosphere, but the real reason to visit lies in the two magnificent tapestries on display here. The 14th century “Apocalypse,” is on display at the Chateau d’Angers, a 13th century fortress, while the 20th century “Chant du Monde” can be found at the Musee Jean Lurcat.
The St. Maurice cathedral is located in the historic centre and boasts amazing stained glass and a stunning Norman entrance. Before you leave, be sure to rent a car so you can travel to the south of Angers where you can sample Savennieres and Coteaux du Layon – some of the Loire Valley’s most treasured wines!
