Autun is a small town located in the Saone-et-Loire region of Burgundy in France. Still surrounded by ramparts (fortified walls), the town lies in front of the Morvan Hills and was once a thriving Roman centre.
Even today, the Roman monuments are the town’s main attractions. Two gates remain set in the fortified walls, a corner remains of the once-grand Temple of Janus and a Roman amphitheater delights visitors, as does a odd-shaped pyramid known as Pierre de Couhard that is located just outside the walls to the south of town.
Other sites of interest include an old circular plan prison, one of the first in all of France to be designed using individual prison cells, and the Cathedral St. Lazare–a magnificent Roman style structure that is located within the town walls and renowned for its many sculptures and carvings. If time is limited, be sure to at least take a moment to examine the tympanum above the west door. |
