Located just over 75 kilometres north of Paris, France, the large town of Beauvais lies in the Picardy region. Unfortunately the ancient, old town centre was mostly destroyed during World War II, but a few stunning monuments and buildings have survived. They are scattered all over town, however, so be sure to rent a car while visiting and keep an eye out for metal markers while traveling around town, as these denote places of interest. The tourism office can tell you exactly what they refer to.
Although incomplete, the cathedral of Saint Peter is unquestionably the highlight of any tour of Beauvais. Built in the impressive gothic style and dating from the 14th – 16th centuries, it is replete with countless interesting carvings and stained class windows. The 19th-century astronomical clock is also a big point of interest, as it is the largest of its kind in the world |
