The town of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine is located in the Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France where the Rhône and Valserine rivers converge, southeast of Gex near the Swiss border. Interestingly, the two rivers run underground here, making it possible to cross them on nothing but a tiny foot bridge. The town is situated in a valley near the plateau of Retord, which lies to the west, and the Vuache and Grand Crêt d'Eau massifs, which can be found to the east.
Be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine, in order to enjoy anytime access to the many attractions in the region, including a wide variety of outdoor and sporting activities. Also of note, the town’s 13th century Château de Musinens hosts a very popular medieval festival each September, while a 17th century tollbooth still lies on the banks of the Valserine River. In addition, a high-speed TGV train has been servicing Bellegarde-sur-Valserine since the 1960s and allows travelers to reach Paris in just over 3 hours. |
