Tucked between Tours and Orleans in the Loire Valley, the city of Blois, France, is perhaps most famous for its Chateau de Blois, which lies in the very centre of town. A Renaissance chateau that was once occupied by King Louis XII, as well as a series of other French kings, Joan of Arc also was blessed here in 1429. Sadly, the castle was neglected for much of the 17th and 18th centuries, narrowly avoiding demolition before it was named a National Monument in 1841.
There is also a charming 18th century stone bridge that spans the River Loire, and the town is dotted with steep, curving streets and heart-stopping staircases that make exploration a thrill! Be sure to take your rental car out of town as well and pay a visit to the Foret de Blois, the Parc de Chambord and the Foret de Boulogne, as well as various other impressive chateaux that dot the landscape. |
