Brignoles is nestled in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region in southern France and provides a summer residence for the counts of Provence, whose castle dates to the 13th century. A large market town, it is renowned for its honey, olives, olive oil and peaches.
The medieval old town of Brignoles lies just a short jaunt up a small hill from the center of town. Houses here are consistently being renovated to boast traditional Provecal pastel colors. Dating from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the old town here contains some truly ancient sites, including the Place des Comptes de Provence, which housed the first ever Palace of the Counts of Provence.
The Abbaye de la Celle is located just 2 kilometers southwest of town and originally functioned as a 13th century Benedictine convent. Today, the 17th century Prioress’s house has been converted into a hotel, while the Romanesque abbey church is still used as the local parish. The cloisters, refectory and chapter house can all be visited. |
