Located on the coast in the Normandy region of France, the town of Caen was almost completely destroyed during World War II following the Normandy beach landings of the allied forces. After spending 15 years reconstructing the town and repairing the damage from the war, the town has continued to improve in recent years, making this a popular tourist destination.
When visiting Caen, be sure to stop at the Chateau Ducal, which was built by William the Conquerer to protect and house his residential palace. Although the castle was destroyed in the war, the massive ramparts remain, providing excellent views of the city. The ramparts also house the Musee des Beaux Arts and the Musee de Normandie.
The main town lies beneath the ramparts between the Abbeye aux Hommes and the Abbeye aux Dames. Also, be sure to stroll down the Rue St. Pierre, a charming pedestrian-only street brimming with impressive buildings, shops and cafes. |
