As the capital of the region of Champagne-Ardenne in France, the city of Chalons En Champagne was renamed in 1998. The original name was Chalons-sur-Marne, so called due to its location on the right bank of the river Marne.
Chalons En Champagne is renowned for its early Gothic church, Notre Dame en Vaux, which dates to the 12th century. The four towers of this architectural masterpiece make it one of the most beautiful churches in the region, as does the magnificent 16th century stained glass window in the choir, known as the “Troyes Window.”
Also of note, the Musee du Cloitre contains excellent examples of intricately sculptured capitals and columns, while the 13th century Cathedral of St-Etienne boasts a rich treasury, an impressive stained glass window dating back to the 15th century, and a stunning Romanesque tower over the choir. Finally, be sure to pay a visit to the Porte Ste-Croix on the south side of town while visiting, as it was built in honor of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in 1770. |
