The magnificent walled town of Dinan is located in the Brittany region of France, south of Dinard and north of Rennes. Any visit to Brittany demands a stop in this charming locale, so be sure to rent a car and be mobile! The town itself overlooks the River Rance, and boasts ramparts that cover nearly three kilometers and are still pretty much intact.
The historical medieval old town section of Dinan is lovely and brimming with ancient half-timbered homes and other attractions. The Dinan Chateau, for example, is located in the dungeon of the ramparts and was built in 1384. Today, the castle houses the town museum and several medieval tombs in the basement. The 15th century clock tower, known as Tour de l’horloge, boasts impressive views of the town, while the Basilique Saint Sauveur displays a unique mix of gothic and roman styles and is the burial place for the heart of Bertrand Du Guesclin – saviour of the town in a battle against the English |
