The town of Draguignan is located in the Provence Cote d’Azur region of France and makes a great starting point for day trips by rented car into the surrounding countryside, which is dotted with countless medieval villages, olive groves and vineyards. Here, visitors will also find wild canyons, including the Grand Canyon de Verdon and Gorges de Chateaudouble to the north of town.
The old town in Draguignan is encompassed by gorgeous avenues of plane trees and is dominated by the town’s Tour de l’Horloge – a 24-metre high bell tower dating back to 1663 that is topped by a classical wrought-iron campanile. Also of note, St Michel at Place de la Paroisse boasts a wooden roof and an impressive statue of St. Hermentaire, who is rumored to have slain a dragon here in the 5th century. In fact, the town’s name is derived from that of the dragon, and a square near here hosts a large market every Saturday. |
