Located a mere 10 kilometers from the Belgian border in northern France, the town of Dunkerque is surrounded by 700 hectares of sand dunes and 15 kilometers of gorgeous beaches, making this a popular getaway for visitors from around the world. The port here has been in operation since the 8th century, making Dunkerque a centre of tradition, culture and maritime history that is replete with museums and a magnificent architectural heritage.
Dunkerque has long been coveted as an important strategic location, most recently during World War II when the Germans invaded France and the city served as a crucial evacuation point, allowing hundreds of thousands of people to escape to Great Britain. Today, Dunkerque remains a thriving locale, boasting hundreds of wonderful shops, several interesting museums and a wide variety of sporting activities. In addition, the old town centre has recently been restored. The project, dubbed “Neptune,” was supervised by renowned British architect Richard Rogers and is a delight to behold. |
