Located in the inland region of Normandy, the town of Evreux lies to the west of the Monet Gardens at Giverny in France. Several well thought out paths through the many parks of this town and along the banks of the River Iton make it a delight to visit, but the area surrounding the great cathedral is the true heart of town.
The cathedral of Notre Dame here is perhaps the greatest highlight and boasts amazingly intricate decorations on the façade that date to the “Flamboyant” period of architecture, as well as gorgeous stained glass windows. In addition, the Museum of Evreux holds a variety of interesting artifacts that date all the way back to Gallo-Roman times and is definitely worth a visit. A little-known but interesting fact about this city is that 1960s pop star Jimi Hendrix began his very first tour with the band The Experience, here on October 13, 1966 – an event that is remembered in a special plaque located in the town! |
