The French-speaking city of Geneva straddles the border of France and is nestled where the Rhone River meets Lake Geneva (known in France as Lac Leman). The city has been called the seventh most important financial centre in the world and is reputed to have a very high quality of life. It is also known as the “Peace Capital” of the world, perhaps due to its role as the headquarters for the Red Cross and the United Nations (UN), among other such organizations.
Visitors will delight at the more than 30 art galleries and museums in Geneva, including the Palace of Nations (headquarters of the UN), the Red Crescent Museum, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the International Red Cross Museum. Geneva’s most famous monument is arguably Le Jet d’eau, which is the world’s tallest water fountain and provides a constant landmark, helping visitors get their bearings when exploring the city. |
