Located on the banks of the Couze River in the Auvergne region of central France, the town of Issoire is just 40 kilometers southeast of Clermont-Ferrand on a fertile plain of the Petites Limagnes – a number of natural basins that can be found along the Allier River. Inhabited since the first century CE, the entire area boasts a rich history and unique cultural heritage, so be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit, in order to enjoy the region at your own pace.
While in Issoire, be sure to visit the beautiful, 12th century church of Saint-Augustine, which is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture and boasts a number of intricate decorations, including fine paintings and several stunning stained glass windows. Also of note, the 15th century La Tour de l'Horloge, or ‘the clock tower,’ offers breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding countryside, all the way to the distant Puy de Sancy Mountains. |
