Situated on the Yon River in the Pays de la Loire region of western France, the city of La Roche Sur Yon was rebuilt by Napoleon in 1804 to pacify the people. This is the reason for the straight, regular lines of the streets here, which is most unusual for French cities. Today, it is an agricultural and transportation centre, producing a variety of light manufactures including automobile parts.
La Roche Sur Yon has a rich heritage and is also near the Loire Valley, which is the region’s centre for economic, educational and cultural activities. It has been dubbed a “World Heritage for Humanity Site” by UNESCO, due in part to its abundance of small farms and exceptional dairy products. Be sure to reserve a car when visiting the area, so you can explore the many jewels of the region at your own pace! |
