Perched on a hilltop in the Picardy region of northern France between Reims and St. Quentin, the town of Laon is often missed by visitors who are making their way south. Those who do stop here, however, are sure to be delightfully surprised by the stunning cathedral that is ocated in this picturesque locale, the towers of which can be seen from miles around.
Widely renowned as one of the most magnificent cathedrals in the entire country, Notre Dame of Laon dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, and features a cloister and a chapter house that are both excellent examples of architecture from this period. Also of note are the many statues and carvings of animals that are interspersed throughout the grounds, as well as a Gothic cloister and the ancient, two-story chapel that is adjacent to the main cathedral. Today, the historical Episcopal Palace that is located right next to Notre Dame of Laon houses the courthouse, and be sure to explore the many medieval buildings that are located in the surrounding town as well. |
