The modest market town of Lourdes is nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains and is perhaps best known for the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes that were reported to occur here in 1858. After this, the town became a major pilgrimage site for Roman Catholics, who often come in search of miraculous healing. In fact, it is the largest pilgrimage site in the country and boasts 270 hotels – the greatest number found in any French town save Paris.
Lourdes is situated on the prime meridian and spring water from the grotto at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is thought to possess healing powers among many of the pilgrims. In addition to the basilica and sanctuary honoring the Virgin Mary, the town is home to the impressive, five-domed St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. Famed architect Myroslav Nimciv designed the exterior, while its magnificent interior Byzantine polychrome decorations are by renowned artist Jerzy Nowosielski. |
