The town of Marmande can be found in the Aquitaine region of southwestern France, around 35 kilometers northwest of Agen, where the Garonne and Trec rivers converge. The original fortified town was settled in the 12th century CE, giving it a rich cultural heritage and making it a popular tourist destination today – especially among travelers taking a road trip through the entire region, so consider reserving a rental car for your visit.
While in Marmande, check out the 13th century church of Notre-Dame, which boasts a magnificent Renaissance cloister, stunning nave windows and a brilliant 18th century altarpiece. The town is also renowned for its tomato production, so consider timing your visit to attend the annual tomato festival, which is held every July. Also of note, the region is renowned for its fish, including pike, shad, eels and lamprey, which is caught daily in the Garonne River and served up nightly in the local tradition by a number of restaurants. |
