Located in the heart of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region of France, Marseille is the second largest city in the country next to Paris and is the country’s most important seaport. Established more than 2600 years ago as a trading port, the spirit of the city has always been one of independence, so it’s no surprise that Marseille supported the French Revolution in 1792.
Although most of the old north port was destroyed during World War II, the area has been rebuilt and Roman remains that were uncovered during the process can be viewed at the Musee des Docks Romains. The ancient southern portion of the old port boasts a lively pedestrian area with an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and cafes. The Opera can also be found here, as can the national theatre, La Criee. In addition, be sure to visit the 19th century Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde, an impressive Roman-Byzantine style basilica, which offers an unparalleled view of Marseille. |
