The small industrial town of Montbard can be found on the Brenne River in the Burgundy region of eastern France along the Burgundy Canal, which was constructed in the mid-19th century to connect the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. The town lies north of Semur-en-Auxois and east of Avallon, making this an excellent base from which to explore the many attractions located throughout the entire region, so be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit.
While in the area, be certain to check out the impressive, 12th century Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay, which is located in the nearby town of Marmagne in a picturesque valley and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Also of note, Montbard’s stunning Parc Buffon boasts a number of gorgeous wooded walking trails, as well as an attractive stone and glass orangerie, and the Tour de l’Aubespin, which affords excellent views of the town and the surrounding countryside. |
