Perched on the right bank of the Allier River in the Auvergne region of central France, the town of Moulins is northwest of Lyon and boasts a rich history that is sure to delight visitors. As the onetime seat of the Dukes of Bourbon, this is also where the world-famous fashion designer and trendsetter Coco Chanel once attended school and lived as an orphan.
The neo-Gothic Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Moulins is perhaps the most famous attraction here, with portions of the original structure dating back to the 15th century. Be sure to check out the triptych located in the cathedral, which was created in 1500 by the renowned Dutch painter known as the Maitre de Moulins (master of Moulins), while the 16th century stained-glass window here is also quite impressive. Also of note, the 15th century bell tower has a jaquemart clock that entertains each quarter hour, while the library is home to the stunning the 12th century Bible of Souvigny – one of the world’s finest illuminated manuscripts. |
