The ancient town of Parthenay lies cradled in a bend of the Thouet River in the Poitou-Charentes region of western France, around 40 kilometers north of Niort, 50 kilometers west of Poitiers and 120 kilometers southeast of Nantes. Officially settled since the 11th century, today the town still features a charming medieval centre, making it a popular stop for travelers who are making their way by car through the region.

While visiting Parthenay, be sure to check out the remains of the castle and its ramparts, as well as the picturesque, half-timbered historic homes. The largely pedestrianized shopping section and excellent cafes are also sure to delight, while the magnificent, Romanesque-style church of Saint-Croix is definitely worth a stop. Also of note, the stunning 13th century Pont St-Jacques bridge graciously spans the river, while the Gothic-styled Porte de l’Horloge gateway welcomes visitors to the remains of the old citadel.
