The charming historical town of Roanne lies comfortably on the banks of the Loire River, just 90 kilometers northwest of Lyon in the Rhone-Alpes region of central France. Today, the town is perhaps best known for its textile industry, but it has also managed to become a popular tourist destination thanks to the lively port, stunning monuments and multiple museums that are located here.
The Roannais Textile Ecomuseum, for example, is of particular interest, as it chronicles the long history of textile work among various peoples that have lived in the area, dating all the way back to ancient times. Today, the town is still renowned for producing high quality knitwear, so be sure to snag some items while visiting! Also not to be missed, the magnificent 11th century Castle Donjon is quite interesting, and every visitor should take a moment to appreciate the significance of the historic Helvetian Crossroads in the old town centre. |
