The largely overlooked mountain town of Rodez is located in the Midi-Pyrenees region of southwestern France and has been settled since the 5th century BCE. Although it is not overrun with tourists, Rodez is quite sophisticated and boasts excellent restaurants and superb shopping opportunities, while the breathtaking 16th century Roman Catholic Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rodez is not to be missed. Among its many wonderful features, a fortified western wall and striking red sandstone façade are quite unique.
Today, the historical gem of Rodez is largely dependent upon agriculture for its livelihood, but the historical monuments are sure to delight travelers. In addition, the nearby Pyrenees Mountains are a delight, so be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit and plan a day trip or two while here! Also, check out the 12th century Baroque Church of Saint-Amans, which features marvelous 6th century tapestries in the choir and a 15th century Pieta. |
