Located in the Brittany region of northwestern France, the bustling seaside village of Roscoff lies just across the English Channel from Great Britain and Ireland. Regular cross-channel sea travel encourages trade and boosts the local economies. While visiting, plan a trip to the nearby Ile-de-Batz, which protects Roscoff from harsh weather and provides excellent views of the rocky coastline.
A deep-water port since the late 1960s, Roscoff is also a thriving base for ferries that regularly transport Breton agricultural goods and car-based tourism back and forth between France, Ireland and England. Also of note, be sure to check out the church of Notre-Dame de Croaz Batz and the house rumored to have once belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots. In addition, the Station biologique de Roscoff conducts research in the fields of oceanography and marine biology, while the Jardin Exotique de Roscoff contains more than 3,000 subtropical plants from the southern hemisphere. |
