The town of Saint-Gaudens is situated in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France, southwest of Toulouse and southeast of Tarbes. It is perched on a precipice overlooking the Garonne Valley and faces the Pyrenees Mountains, historically at a logical crossroads for over land trade routes between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Popular day trips in the area include visits to the nearby bastide town of Carbonne, or the Pyrennean spa-town of Bagneres-de-Luchon. Inhabited since ancient times, the town has become quite popular today among tourists traveling through the region on scenic road trips.
While visiting Saint-Gaudens, be sure to check out the cloister and chapter house, as well as the 11th century Romanesque-style basilica, which was built on the site of an even older religious structure. In the heart of the old portion of town, visitors will find a wealth of medieval buildings, as well as a number of intricately decorated 18th century town homes. |
