The town of Saverne is located in the Alsace region of northeastern France on the Rhine-Marne canal just over 40 kilometers from Strasbourg near the foothills of the Vosges Mountains. Settled since Roman times, today it is a popular tourist destination, thanks to the many attractions in the area.
The 18th century Chateau des Rohan is perhaps the most popular site, designed by renowned architect Nicolas Salins de Montfort, the façade is constructed from red sandstone and lines a full 140 meters of the Rhine-Marne canal’s bank! Interestingly, the original 15th century castle that was built near this site has also been preserved, in addition to its 15th century Roman Catholic Church, which boasts a number of magnificent sculptures. Also of interest, the Recollets monastery features a cloister with stunning 17th century frescoes, while the town’s renowned rose garden is home to more than 550 varieties and hosts the annual Contest of New Roses. |
