The port town of St. Raphael is located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region of southeastern France and has actually been combined of late with the nearby, even older town of Frejus to form a new urban center that is known as Frejus St. Raphael. The two communities are actually only separated today by the Pedegal River, while the nearby looming mountain summit of Mont Vinaigre stands sentry and the red soil adds an unusual hue to the landscape.
Today, St. Raphael has become quite popular as a tourist destination, but Frejus gets most of the credit for being a well-preserved historical gem. The seaside Belle Epoque mansions and commercial buildings in St. Raphael are stunning, however, while the pristine beaches are second to none! Also of note, the now-dilapidated Romanesque church of Eglise St-Pierre still boasts evidence of an ancient yet amazingly engineered Roman aqueduct |
