The city of Toulon is situated in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southern France on the Mediterranean Sea. It is also home to a major naval base and large military harbor, and it is a thriving centre for fishing, wine production, naval construction and aeronautical equipment.
Inhabited by humans since the Paleolithic era, today the coast of Toulon is also a popular tourist destination, thanks to its rich history and the warm, sunny climate of the region. While visiting, be sure to check out the old town centre, which is located near the port. It is a lively pedestrian area that is brimming with narrow, winding streets, tiny squares and ancient fountains that have been beautifully restored in recent years. Here, visitors will also thrill to the sight of the 11th century Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds de Toulon, which is a national monument of France, as well as to the famed Provençal market, which is held each morning on the Cours Lafayette and offers a variety of wonderful local goods for sale. |
