The ancient city of Troyes lies along the banks of the Seine River in the Champagne-Ardenne region of northeastern France, just over 150 kilometers southeast of Paris, and around 125 kilometers south of Reims. Settled since the Roman era, the city boasts a rich history, making it a popular tourist destination today.
While visiting Troyes, be sure to check out the impressive, 13th century mostly Gothic-style Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Troyes, which boasts stunning stained-glass windows and an elaborate, 16th century façade. In fact, a number of magnificent churches can be found in Troyes, including the 13th century Gothic-style Saint-Urban Basilica, the impressively decorated Gothic and Renaissance-style Saint-Nizier church, and the 16th century Gothic-style Saint-Nicholas church, to name only a few. Also of note, the present day Hôtel de Ville, or ‘town hall,’ was once a palace built for French kings, while the old town of Troyes boasts a number of charming, 16th century half-timbered houses. |
