Located in the Tarentaise Valley, just five kilometers from the Italian border in the Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France, the town of Val-d'Isère stretches along the perimeter of the magnificent Vanoise National Park. In addition, it has hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, thanks to the world-class ski resort that can be found here. Visitors can purchase a weekly lift ticket that provides access to various parts of the l’Espace Killy, or ‘Most Beautiful Ski Area in the World.’
Val-d'Isère also boasts magnificent examples of ‘chalet-style’ architecture, while the existence of the Glacier de Pissaillas makes it possible to ski year-round. The valley itself has been inhabited since pre-Roman times, but it did not become a formal town until the early 17th century. Today, visitors can tour the original parish church in the old town centre, but be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit to Val-d'Isère in order to easily experience the sights outside of town as well. |
