Sprawling alongside the Loire River, the ancient town of Vendôme is situated in the Centre region of France, around 100 kilometers southwest of Chartres and 65 kilometers northeast of Tours. Interestingly, the river separates into a number of smaller streams here, which run through the town, creating a charming backdrop for a number of lovely homes lining the waterways. In addition, the rich history and spectacular scenery have helped to make this a popular stop for tourists driving through the region in recent years.
While visiting Vendôme, be sure to check out the imposing, 12th century Gothic-style, abbey-church of the Holy Trinity, as well as the 15th century church of La Madeleine, and the ruins of the 16th century church of Saint-Martin. Also of note, the Porte Saint-Georges is an impressively preserved old town gate, while the old town centre boasts a number of excellent examples of 15th and 16th century dwellings. |
