Located in the West of Germany and close to the Belgian border, Aachen is a spa city rich with a rich tapestry of history to offer and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which millions of tourists flock to each year to absorb.
Wandering around the city, you will immediately notice the abundance of beautiful fountains which symbolize the city’s historical association with water and each has its unique story. Although severely damaged during World War II there still remains some wonderful examples of medieval German architecture for history buffs, including the Aachen Cathedral which was built during Charlemagne’s period of reign in 800 AD. Numerous events dominate the social life of the city with one particular highlight being the Christmas Market, which is held against the backdrop of the Cathedral and town hall. The Theatre also offers a variety of performances, from opera to contemporary theatre. The many parks also offer ample opportunity for relaxation.
There are a variety of gastronomic surprises on offer, from high-end restaurants such as the Cellar Restaurant on Market Street to patisseries such as Café-Restaurant Napoleon Korneliusmarkt 54-56 for a stopping point after a day of sightseeing. These will prove perfect for your fix of Aachen Printenbäckern – the city’s famous cake, the recipe of which remains a closely guarded secret - or a quiet espresso. |
