Situated in the centre of Hesse and, as such, in the heart of Germany, easily located along the A5 Autobahn, Alsfeld is a great stop for your driving holiday, with its winding country roads. The beautiful ancient walls of the old town are home to many points of interest including the castle built by Hermann II in 1695 and which he used as his official residence. The Knull Mountains to the south offer impressive views of the Alsfeld basin.
Water enthusiasts will feel right at home with the variety of lakes, including Gedern, Schotten, Freiensteinau and Schlitz close to the city. These provide idyllic settings for swimming, camping and other activities like golfing and boating. A particular highlight of these aqua gems is 15 hectares Gedern Lake which is home to Lake Festival each July; a great way to spend your vacation, there are culinary delights and fireworks which make for an unforgettable experience.
