Located only an hour’s drive from Leipzig, Altenburg is a treasure trove of culture. With the remnants of Slavic descent on show – most notably in the castle Schloßberg – it historically held an importance position as a main player in the salt trade in ancient times. However, it remains best known for being the main producer of playing cards in the whole of Germany; in fact, anyone in Germany trying their hand at Skat – the game which also originated in the town - will likely be holding one of Altenburg’s products. Indeed, you can even pay a visit to the Castle and Playing Card Museum, located at Schloss.
Aside from this, there are a variety of natural leisure pursuits that are sure to keep you occupied on your travel; the Green Oasis by the Great Pond is a lovely example of the sumptuous natural scenery, as well as the former royal residence. |
