Situated not far from Mainz and in the Rhine River Valley, Alzey is a market town and a picture perfect example of small-town Germany with a variety of culinary and visual pleasures suit every traveller and every taste. Dating from Roman times, it offers a visual feast. As an abundance of traditional timber-framed houses populate the town centre, it’s the ideal place to walk and explore. Several impressive landmarks dot the area, including the Horse Market and Fish Market. The history doesn’t stop there; during World War II, the town also became part of legend after bombers mistook the old watchtower for a church steeple and thus aimed their bombs at a nearby hill.
Throughout the year, there are a variety of festivals which bring the locals together, including the Wine Festival, which is the largest and runs in September. It features regional wines, a market and traditional folk games. |
