An important trading town in the middle ages, Amberg retains a market-town charm that makes it an exciting place for international visitors. Owing its economic strength to iron ore mining as well as trade, the town is rightly proud of its heritage. Strolling downtown, one can take in many of the architectural spectacles, including the Stadtbrille bridge which arches over the river and originally served as one of the main fortifications of the building. Aside from the Market Square, home to the Gothic-style town hall as well as the Parish Church of St. Martin, The New Palace, the previous residence of counts of Rhennish Palatinate, is a prime example of the fine history on offer in the city.
Outside of the town proper, the Hill of Our Lady Help of Christians sits atop the town and is another scenic spot well worth a look. When you’re finished looking around these great diversions, you can stop for a cappuccino at one of the many cafes that dot the town. |
