A scenic river town only half an hour from Frankfurt Airport by car, Aschaffenburg is also a significant business and cultural centre. A large town of seventy thousand people, it has long been regarded to offer one of the highest qualities of life in the whole of Germany and its rich diversity, natural scenic beauty and pleasant climate led to King Ludwig I to call it his ‘Bavarian Nice’. Strolling around, it is not difficult to see why; the picturesque old town – home to numerous bars and bistros on the Dalbergstraße - stretches round to the Town hall and then leads up to the spectacular Johannisburg Castle, which is the visual highlight of the town. Other places of note include the stunning Basilica Church and the Municipal Theatre.
Another highlight for visitors is the Aschaffenburg parklands, which were created by Erthal under Archbishop Karl Joseph in the eighteenth century and have a distinctly English style. |
