Only thirty kilometres north of Stuttgart, Backnang is a pretty town that has its history in trade. Set close to the River Murr and amidst delightful countryside and orchards, it is also a stopping point for visiting the Swabian-Franconian Forest National Park. Previously considered part of Baden between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, it can to an extent be regarded as the cradle of the region.
The core of the town is the Burrberg, which is populated with many historical buildings, including the church, Stiftskirche, which dates from the twelfth century. Many traditional churches can be seen as you make your way through the town centre. The Augustinian Canonry and the town Tower and Schoolhouse can all be taken in. The local gallery also plays host to regular exhibitions of contemporary and folk art.
Culturally, Backnang offers a variety seasonal festivities to suit all tastes. The highlight of these is the Strassenfest, which is held at the end of June. Lasing for four days it offers a glimpse of the best that Backnang has to offer – from sports clubs holding contests, to cultural clubs offering traditional food, drinks and hospitality. |
