A district town in Hesse, Bad Homburg is easily reached by car from Frankfurt. A town much beloved by foreign influences as well as local, it bears all the hallmarks of this to the present day. Winding up from the historical Old Town and through the Market Square, you might be forgiven for thinking that you’d wandered into a fairytale story. Louisenstrasse, the lively centre, offers many boutiques, eateries and other diversions should you feel the need to take a rest.
One of the wealthiest towns in Germany, the town was also well loved by British and Russians alike. Both used the town as their spa, particularly during King Edward VII’s reign; so much so that they even erected their own Church, which now serves as a cultural centre for locals. Of the many spas to see, Elizabethbrunnen is the best example, but there are many dotted around the town. The Russian Church still serves as one of the main tourist attractions in the town. The British also brought their influence to the sports field in the form of the Homburg Golf Club that is located in the ground of the Taunus Theme and is often termed the ‘cradle of German golf’. There is also an impressive and popular ‘New Course’ on the western edge of the town. |
