Close to the famous River Spree and around fifty kilometres to the East of Dresden in Upper Lusatia, the thousand year old city of Bautzen is a romantic’s dream. St Peter’s Cathedral, used by both Catholic and Evangelical denominations, sits proudly in the centre and equally impressive are the Nicolai Cemetary, with its adjoining church ruins and battlements. In the twentieth century the subcamp of the Groß-Rosen concentration camp was located here; indeed, Bautzen I is still used as a prison, whilst Bautzen II has served as a memorial since 1993. The Old Waterworks, which are now a preserved monument and museum, are also another highlight.
Aside from the well-preserved old-town area, there is also ample opportunity to experience German and Sorbian cultures in the surrounding area. These offer a diverse range of leisure activities to suit. Bautzen is also conveniently reached by its own interchange from the Autobahn route |
