Bergheim is situated in the northern part of the Magaliesberg mountains, not far from Rustenburg in North West Province. It is connected with the Bundesautobahn 61, as well as many more country roads. The fertile farmland that surrounds the drive makes it the ideal backdrop for travelling to the town, which originated in the sixth century; indeed, the name literally translates as ‘settlement on a hill’.
The town is home to some striking buildings, including the parish church of St. Remigius in the Abbey Brauweiler, the latter of which is considered one of the most important Romanesque churches to have been built in the Rhine-Erft district. Many famous Germans have taken holidays or periods of residence here, including Nobel Prize winner Gunter Grass. F1 legend Michael Schumacher also spent some of his childhood near to the town. Be sure to check out the Bistro on Schloss Paffendorf for a taste of Bergheimer hospitality. |
